CARRYING OUT MY GAME PLAN
In evaluating my game I need to reassess the goals, actions, monitoring and evaluating that will take place. In order to carry out an effective game plan I will need additional resources, information and be able to carry out different steps in the process.
The resources that I will need to carry out my came plan are word-processing applications, this tool will help students in their writing and editing research papers and wikis. I would like to acquire the word prediction software that helps “identify words quickly based on common usage patterns, arrangement of letters, or suggestions based on grammar” (Cennamo, Ross, & Ertmer, 2009). Also, the multimedia tools that offer student’s audio and visual information. Finally, I will need to obtain approval of my administrator’s to acquire the software and hardware to have available for student’s to use and the support of my colleagues in the Social Studies department to collaborate with me in using these resources in their classes.
I will need additional professional development training in technology and information on how to download the software and hardware that I plan to use with my students.
At this point in my game plan I have began to write lesson plans for the upcoming school year that are centered on the universal design for learning.

Writing lesson plans already? Awesome!
ReplyDeleteYou mention the use of word-prediction software, and I'm beginning to think more about its usefulness in any classroom. As an English teacher, I ask my students to type some of their writing (helps me read it and it's good practice), but it takes them forever! They hunt and peck. Apparently computer classes no long teach typing. If word-prediction software, as Cennamo, Ross, and Ertmer (2009) states, actually "helps students identify words quickly based on common usage patterns" (p.123) then I would welcome the technology. Our book also mentions that this software makes predictions based on grammar. Do you think this means that students need to have correct grammar? Will the software help correct grammar errors or will it continue with the student's pattern of bad grammar?

I like using word prediction software for all kids. I do not think that you need to be a diverse learner to use this. I also like Dragon Naturally Speaking. It really works great for kids who love to talk and have so many things running through their heads that they cannot possibly write it all down. I love that it types for them. If you have not used it try it. It is worth the effort. I have and older version and love it when I have something huge to write for work.
ReplyDeleteIt seems as if you have your steps down on what you need to do to begin and continue through. Do you think that you might have an issue with acquiring the software? Do you think that your admin. might have an issue with it considering budget?

I Agree with Valerie! That is great that you are starting your lesson plans! I think that the word prediction software will be a great tool when it comes to teaching writing. When it comes to teaching writing myself, I struggle with teaching students how to properly edit. They feel that if they glace over their paper once, they have edited their work. To have a software program that aids students during the editing process, I would be delighted. I think them seeing how to properly edit by watching the software they will begin to model what they see. If your administrators allow you to buy this software, I would be interested in how you like it! Keep me updated!

Here is the software that I use for writing---it is really not a word prediction piece of software, but the special ed kids I use it with really like it.....it is on my laptop right now. I love it because you can put your own vocabulary words and spelling words into the program for your content area.

It is worth the money. Our kids like it and we are getting better writers and better comprehension because they are not worried about the spelling and choosing the right words.

Valerie, I have done some research on the word prediction program and I was able to find that it automatically collects and assign grammar to most new and learned words. I would like to be able to purchase the software to preview it and train myself to teach my students to use it for the upcoming school year.

Julie,
ReplyDeleteI have to teach typing to my 6th grade Home and Careers class. When they get to me I have many bad typing habit to break. It amazes me how under developed this skill is. By the end of the 5 week session that we work on typing in I have had many students improve. Keep up the good work. You have a good plan going.
